FECI Grand Plan for 9 Acres in Downtown Miami

by Isaac Benmergui, Esq on July 18, 2012

Florida East Coast Industries (FECI) has a grand plan for the nine acres it owns in downtown Miami. FECI wants to build a sort of Grand Central Station for train service between Miami and Orlando.

The “All Aboard Florida” passenger line will include the “destination site” of the station that could house everything from office space to private residences. If built, the nine-acre site would be larger than Brickell CitiCentre, but smaller than the proposed Genting casino development.

The project could mean 1,200 construction-related jobs and 400 permanent jobs. The train itself would be offer high-speed travel of three hours or less between the two destinations; making it competitive with plane or car travel. The train would also accommodate coach and first-class and cost between $59 to $69. Compare that with airfare of same-day travel for $400 or more.

Stations in Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach and Orlando International Airport are proposed.
