Upgraded Senior Housing Coming to South Miami

by Isaac Benmergui, Esq on October 8, 2012

Low income seniors of the South Miami Plaza Community Center will soon see upgrades to their residences. While welcoming the upgrades, the seniors, many of whom are disabled, fear the humidity issues causing mold growth may be ignored.

Miami-Dade County officials hired a division of The Related Group to complete the renovations and the developer is currently assessing the humidity problem.  The development, with roughly 103 residents, is a six-story building comprised of 97 units – 17 one-bedrooms and 80 efficiencies. The Related Group has pushed the renovations to begin in January and has met with the residents several times in order to address all the concerns.

“We have always heard that there is a smell of mold in there,” South Miami commissioner Bob Welsh said. The developer is not planning to replace dry wall or insulate interiors walls due to the cost; instead it will focus on improving air quality.
