Hotel Wars at Miami Beach’s Eden Roc

by Isaac Benmergui, Esq on October 19, 2012

The owner of the Eden Roc in Miami Beach wants the management company, Marriott, out. In a dramatic attempt to hasten the ouster, the Miami Beach police had to be called as an attempt at a hostile takeover took place at 2 a.m. on a Sunday complete with uniformed security guards, threats of job loss to employees if they did not cooperate and a lock change on hotel offices. Employees called the police who warned the owners against taking action.

Marriott International and Renaissance are suing the owner of Eden Roc and a judge granted a temporary restraining order against the hotel owner from interfering or replacing management; a hearing is scheduled for mid-November.

Eden Roc and Marriott have been engaged in a battle in which the hotel’s owner believes Marriott is not maximizing profits.

This is not the first such hotel war and takeover attempt in recent times, last August the owners of the Waikiki Edition – also a Marriott brand – pushed Marriott out. Owners of the former Fairmont Turnberry Isle in Aventura threw out Fairmont in another surprise takeover.
