Room w windowsThe stakes are high for the redevelopment of the Miami Beach Convention Center. Developers Portman-CMC and South Beach ACE are vying for the $1 billion-plus contract for the Miami Beach Convention Center overhaul, which includes development of 52 acres of public land. The size of the project makes it the city’s biggest public works project in nearly a century.

The cost of the project will be funded through a new penny tax on hotel beds, along with the chosen developer’s lease on the land. Included in both developers’ plans are condo homes, parks, cultural venues, retail shops and a hotel. A July 17 vote is expected by the city commissioners to choose the developer.
