20 Indicted in South Florida Home Equity Fraud

The U.S. Attorney’s office this week indicted 20 South Floridians, including real estate and banking professionals in a $40 million mortgage fraud case.

The indictment alleges that the brother and sister team of Alina Rubi and Camillo Garcia, fraudulently obtained home equity lines of credit and mortgage loans with the assistance of Regions Bank manager, Ivette Carreno, who helped get the loans approved.

The indictment further alleges that Garcia’s wife assisted in falsifying the borrower’s income, employment information and total amount of assets in the loan documents. A title agent also indicted, assisted in the disbursement of millions of dollars in loan proceeds to the parties.

The charges listed in the indictment include conspiracy to commit bank fraud, bank fraud and other mortgage fraud charges.
