Home Trends to Look for in 2017

Home Trends to Look for in 2017The homes of 2017 are getting smarter, working harder, and looking better than ever before. Smart-home tech is making a surge this year, both in items you can install, such as kitchen gadgets, and in items you can take with you, like portable smart locks, motion-activated LED lightbulbs, and smart assistants that can control all those things remotely, such as the Amazon Echo or Google Home.

Here are some low-tech design trends for 2017 making the rounds:

  1. Brass finishes. Called satin brass, the gold-hued finish is making a comeback from its post-80s obscurity. This more low-key cousin of brass is showing up as fixtures, findings and finishes all over the house, from kitchen to bathroom. For a more modern look, mix your metals up a little.
  2. Vanity conversions. Can’t find that perfect sink? Transform an antique buffet or dresser for a totally custom look.
  3. Kitchen storage walls. This is a great trend for those remodeling historic homes, designing tiny homes, or working with smaller spaces. The storage wall utilizes every inch of space from ceiling to floor to maximize use without adding square footage. Drawers and other specialized compartments are a huge part of this trend.
  4. Pantone’s color of the year for 2017 is “Greenery,” a shade that brings warmth and life to wood tones in the kitchen and other living spaces. Use as a bold accent color, or in small doses all over.
  5. Luxury laundry rooms. The latest functional spaces to get makeovers have been the garage and the master bath, so why not the laundry room? Futuristic-looking top-loaders seem to have inspired designers to couple style with function in the modern laundry room, bringing more storage, light, and style to what was once just a closet.
