O.J. Simpson’s Children Go on Real Estate Shopping Spree Ahead of Prison Release

O.J. Simpson’s Children Go on Real Estate Shopping Spree Ahead of ReleaseO.J. Simpson will be paroled in October 2017 after serving time for armed robbery. In the meantime, his children, Justin and Sydney, have been buying up real estate near St. Petersburg, Florida, to the tune of $500,000. That may not seem like much, but Simpson owes more than $30 million in a civil judgment granted in favor of Nicole Brown’s parents and the family of Ron Goldman, and much of that money is tied up in protected trusts and estates in Florida.

Florida has some of the most protective homestead exemptions in the country, allowing individuals to exempt an unlimited amount of value in their home or other property as long as it’s not more than half an acre in-town or 160 acres outside of a municipality. That means if you sink everything you have in a property, in many cases it can’t be taken due to judgments or bankruptcy.

That’s what is concerning the family of Ron Goldman, who suspects Simpson may have given his children the money to buy real estate. Simpson owes nearly all of the $33.5 million judgment against him, and while certain assets are exempt form the judgment, others aren’t, possibly including what he has given away. Goldman’s father is seeking bank records to determine if that’s the case.

Both Sydney and Justin have been using LLCs to scoop up small apartments and multifamily housing since 2015. They were both just children and sleeping upstairs in 1994 when their mother and her friend Ron Goldman were murdered outside her Brentwood home. While O.J. was found not guilty in a criminal trial, he was held liable in civil proceedings, where the standard of proof is much lower.
