Opposition to Miami Casinos Could Sour Real Estate Market

by Isaac Benmergui, Esq on January 29, 2012

Three Las Vegas Resorts and a Malaysian power investor could have their hopes of building casinos in South Florida dashed if Florida legislators bow to pressure from groups opposing the new gambling meccas. Genting Group has already purchased a large tract of land from the Miami Herald and the other resorts have large proposals on standby.

The Indian Gaming consort, the Walt Disney Companies, religious groups and other conservative interests are using their incredible influence to try to block the changes needed to Florida law in order to allow the construction of new casinos. Under existing Florida law, only Indian gaming is permitted in the state, and it is currently unregulated. New laws would force Indian gaming into a new regulated system.

Within the next few weeks, Florida’s legislature will decide if the state will join the ranks of New Jersey, California, Mississippi and Nevada and adopt big time gaming into its economy.
