Revitalizing Miami’s 52-acre Convention Center Site

by Isaac Benmergui, Esq on May 16, 2012

Miami’s Convention Center doesn’t draw major conventions. Why? Because Miami, as a prime tourist destination with all the amenities of pristine beaches, vibrant nightlife, upscale shopping and luxury living, has an outdated convention center. Miami officials have known this for years as they’ve watched Tampa, where the Republican GOP convention will be held, snatch up convention bookings. And they’ve tried to do something about it, but always fell short of an actual commitment to upgrades.

Miami’s officials commit to a new convention center

This time could be different. The city’s leaders took recent action and opened up the bidding on a major project to revitalize and upgrade the 52-acre site and convention center. Project details include a call for 800 on-site hotel rooms and a larger convention center with a new ballroom. Extras might include condos, office towers, shops and parks. The bill for such development could top $1 billion.

Eight bidders in the running for Miami’s new convention center

Eight bidders submitted their responses; a winner could be announced early in 2013; that is, if Miami’s officials remained committed to a vital new convention center.
